Author of the BandhaYoga Anatomy books, Ray Long, MD FRSCS is a board certified orthopedic surgeon and the founder of BandhaYoga. Ray graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School with post-graduate training at Cornell University, McGill University, the University of Montreal and Florida Orthopedic Institute. He has studied yoga for over twenty years, training extensively with BKS Iyengar and other leading yoga masters. This will be an interactive workshop, so wear yoga attire. The syllabus will include review of muscle awakening and body clairvoyance, form and function of the skeleton and of the major joints, ligaments, muscles and tendons, but also introduce techniques for yoga therapeutics.
This is a TWO (2) day event with an optional class on Friday evening at 7:00pm at the KC Yoga Center in City Market.
Friday, October 21 7:00pm - 9:00pm Asana Class using Dr. Long's cues. Free to all registered participants.
Saturday, October 22 9:00am - 4:00 pm with break for lunch
9:00 am - Lunch break : The class will begin with Qi Gong breathing, with an explanation of breathing mechanics. Then we will cover fundamentals of joint and muscle biomechanics and physiology. We will introduce specific stretching techniques, including PNF, loaded stretching and variations of static stretching. We will cover principles of safe movement as applied to asana and practical application of pose analysis. We will also cover the muscles of the core (core exercises will be included in each session).
There will be work on the biomechanics of breathing and seated meditation. We will cover muscle activation for the accessory muscles of breathing and several types of abdominal breathing. The morning session will close with pose analysis for the standing asanas, focusing on the core muscles and practical application in the psoas awakening series of poses.
LunchBreak – 4:00 pm : The afternoon will begin with Qi Gong. This session will continue further deepening of the fundamentals of joint mechanics and physiology, with an emphasis on the pelvis and sacroiliac joint. We will also examine the shoulder joint and rotator cuff.
We will close by pose analysis for the backbends and twists, applying this knowledge to design a class leading to Urdvha danurasana and counter poses. The various stretching techniques such as PNF will be applied to this class.
Sunday, October 23 9:00am - 4:00 pm with break for lunch
9:00 am - LunchBreak : The morning will begin with Qi Gong and Pranayama.The session will review the fundamentals and include a question and answer session. Following this, we will examine the knee joint in detail. The morning will close with analysis of the hip opening poses, focusing specifically on Lotus. We will design a class that will enable practitioners to work toward Lotus and Hanumanasana (full splits) in their daily practice.
LunchBreak – 4:00 pm : The afternoon will begin with seated meditation. The session will cover arm balances and inversions, focusing on Bakasana, full arm balance, Sarvangasana and Sirsasana. We will cover cervical spine anatomy and biomechanics and its relationship to the core, as well as benefits, cautions and contraindications. Class will close with a series of shoulder and chest opening poses designed to lead to Sarvangasana (shoulder stand) and Sirsasana (headstand).

SPACE IS LIMITED SO FIRST COME FIRST MAT DOWN. If you do not arrive in time City Market is a grand place to be on a Friday night. We will be practicing the asanas that will be presented in Dr. Long's workshop using his cues from 7-9:00pm. This class is free to all registered participants and will give you a sneak peak at using the yoga wall for therapeutics. Please bring iPhones/cameras as we will be moving through this material quickly with the reminder that photos are not allowed during the workshop.
